Meeting 18th September 2014: PAT Testing

All being well, we will be having a PAT testing session at the September meeting for anyone who wishes their sewing machines, etc. to be electrically checked. It is our obligation to inform all Hexagon Quilters members who bring sewing machines or other electrical equipment to workshops that these should be PAT tested. We are offering this service at a very reasonable cost of £3 per item which covers the cost of the electrician and the hire of the small room at Charvil. We hope many of you will take advantage of this offer and make sure your equipment is safe.

AGM 15th January 2015 Competition: Hexagons

As announced at this year’s AGM, next year’s competition subject is “Hexagons”. This seemed appropriate as Hexagon Quilters will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in November 2015. What other form those celebrations might take has yet to be decided; please let us know if you come up with some good ideas!

The rules are the same as usual. The maximum size of your quilt should be one metre square (imposed largely because of constraints in hanging space). If you would like to make something three-dimensional that’s fine too. We also thought it would make a change to choose a theme involving piecing, having had number of appliqué themes in recent years. It doesn’t have to be entirely constructed from hexagons; they just need to be a major feature. So get your thinking caps on now!

Workshop: Friday 21 June 2013 - Activity Quilts for People with Dementia

In the Spring edition of The Quilter there were a couple of articles about using patchwork and quilting skills to help people with dementia. One article talked about reminiscence quilts which are made with a recipient in mind. These draw on aspects of their life and their interests to act as a trigger for memories. They use photos transferred onto fabric, familiar pieces of fabric and themed fabrics such as fishing or football to remind the user of aspects of their life. Another aspect of offering help was to make activity mats/quilts. These would provide something to distract, a resource for maintaining skills, and an opportunity for entertainment and reminiscence. The Activity Quilts were developed through a period of trial and error to be about 22 inches square with a fleece backing and a cotton top. The tops were made of themed fabrics e.g. animals, gardens, sport, sea-side as well tactile panels with interesting textures. Each quilt also incorporated a pocket and fastenings such as zips, Velcro and short cords. Since reading about the activity quilts I have also researched them on-line. A couple of links on this page will take you to similar mats and photographs. What can Hexagon Quilters do? I would like us to explore the making of Activity Quilts at our workshop on 21st June. Our speaker is unable to stay on to do a workshop so this looks like an ideal opportunity to ‘have a go’. The products from the workshop will go to Royal Berks Hospital and possibly also a dementia care home. We will then be able to gauge their response to this trial before we make more. To cover the cost of hall hire and the purchase of backing fleece there will be a charge of £6 and we will restrict places to 20 members only. Please book your place now and collect together for the workshop, themed fabrics and tactile fabrics to share, Velcro, pockets, zips, cords and anything else which could be incorporated, which is safe and could withstand robust use and heavy washing.
